A MAN smashed up a bus shelter after an argument with his girlfriend.

Shane Hunter, 21, was spotted by police at 1.05am on July 28, carrying gardening tools, Sunderland magistrates heard.

Hunter, of Ryhope Street in Hendon, then smashed a glass panel with a spade.

He told officers he had too much too drink and came across the gardening tools.

Hunter pleaded guilty to criminal damage. Jason Smith, mitigating, said: “On the night in question, he’s had an argument with his girlfriend, resulting in him having rather too much to drink.

“He happened to pass the bus stop and took out his anger on the bus stop. In hindsight, he should have punched the wall rather than the bus stop, that would have hurt only himself.”

He was told to pay £123.25 compensation, and £85 costs.
