A VICIOUS city centre assault has left a 61-year-old man with serious head injuries.

The victim is recovering in hospital today after he was knocked unconscious during the late-night attack.

Passers-by found the man lying in a pool of blood near Crowtree Leisure Centre, shortly after 11.30pm on Wednesday.

He was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital, where his condition is serious but stable.

The side of the leisure centre in High Street West, near the Crowtree Road junction, was cordoned off until yesterday morning while police carried out investigations.

A 43-year-old-man, who works in the area, but did not want to be named, said: “Apparently an older man was walking up that way when someone came running up and gave him a good hiding.

“I don’t know why they’ve done it, but it sounds like he was in quite a bad way.”

Detectives believe a number of people may have witnessed the attack. They are urging anyone with information to call Sunderland CID on 03456 043 043 extension 69191, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
