A MAN remains in a critical condition today after an alleged assault outside a seafront hotel.

The 48-year-old victim, who is understood to be from the Whitburn area, was allegedly attacked by another man outside the Roker Hotel, Roker Terrace, at about 1.20am last Sunday.

He was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital having sustained serious head injuries.

After an assessment by medics, his condition was deemed life threatening and he was today described as still being “critical but stable”.

The incident is understood to have been witnessed by a number of people in the area at the time.

* Rhys Iles appeared before Sunderland magistrates last week charged with malicious wounding in connection with the incident.

The 28-year-old, of George Scott Street, South Shields, was not asked to enter a plea to the charge, which is too serious for magistrates to deal with.

He was granted bail, with conditions, including that he reports daily to police, does not enter Sunderland, does not contact prosecution witnesses, and observes an electronically-monitored curfew from 7pm to 7am. The case will be heard at Newcastle Crown Court this month.
