A man has been jailed for 12 and a half years for glassing his former step-father.

Matthew Fairhurst had been drinking at his mother’s home without concern when he began swearing and turned on the man, repeatedly punching him.

Durham Crown Court heard the 24-year-old, from Blackhills Terrace, Horden, grabbed him around the neck and stuck close to his right eye with a glass, smashing it and causing a wound.

Efforts were make to restrain him, but Fairhurst continued, hitting him with a walking stick which snapped.

Police were called by Fairhurst’s mother, and he fled, with officers arresting him at his home with blood still on his clothing.

The court heard the victim already suffered from a host of health issues and he was treated for injuries after an ambulance was called.

Fairhurst admitted wounding with intent on the first day of his trial.

Jonathan Walker, mitigating, said Fairhurst was at a loss as to why he attacked and thought his drink might have been spiked.
