A man has been jailed for historic sex offences.
William Joseph Smith, 56, formerly of Hylton Castle in Sunderland was found guilty at Newcastle Crown Court last month after being charged with rape of two young girls.
This week he was sentenced to six-and-a-half years imprisonment for the abuse against the two young victims during the 1970s.
Detective constable Sara Stewart said: “Smith took advantage of his young victims and I’m pleased today they are able to have closure and see him jailed for the abuse he committed.”
Northumbria Police is committed to protecting those who are most vulnerable and making sure victims of crime have the support they need.
“Anyone who thinks they have been a victim of sexual abuse should come forward and report this - no matter when it took place.
“Dedicated teams of specially trained officers will deal with the case in a sensitive manner putting the victim first.”
