Man in hospital after suspected life-threatening arson

A MAN was taken to hospital after a suspected arson incident at his home.

Fire crews were scrambled to a ground-floor flat in Collingwood Court in Usworth, Washington at about 10pm last night.

They spent an hour-and-a-half at the scene, with two officers wearing breathing apparatus sent in to battle the fire and a fan used to clear away fumes.

Police also attended the scene along with the ambulance service.

The man inside the flat was the only person at the property and was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

Officers have arrested a 41-year-old on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life.
