A man who was found drunk at a GP practice told a police woman “this is war” and took a headbutting stance, clenched his fists and bared his teeth.

Staff at Millfield Medical Centre called for help at 11am on July 21, after Duncan Eggleston refused to leave, Sunderland magistrates heard.

Prosecutor Angela Narey said a female police officer found Eggleston standing outside on Hylton Road.

“He stepped forwards, making headbutting gestures with his fists clenched and he bared his teeth. He said ‘This is war, you are all idiots’.”

Eggleston, of Milburn Street, Millfield, admitted being drunk and disorderly.

Peter Thubron, defending, said: “Prior to this incident he had sadly tried to take his own life, by taking a large amount of medication. Because he had taken so many of his pills, he had run out, so he went to the medical centre. They told him he could only have 20 instead of his usual 100 pills, and he became frustrated.”

Magistrates gave him a one-year conditional discharge and told him to pay £165.
