Man found dead at Durham running track had been stabbed, say police

A MAN found dead next to a running track was stabbed detectives have said.

Peter Thomas Maine, 56, from Wynyard in Stockton-on-Tees, was discovered on a path at Maiden Castle Sports Centre just before 8am on Sunday.

The area remained cordoned off yesterday as specialist search teams, including Northumbria Police’s marine unit, carried out checks of the River Wear and its banks.

Durham Constabulary is keen to trace anyone who may have been in the area between Old Elvet and Maiden Castle between 7.15am and 8.15am.

Mr Maine, who was wearing blue tracksuit bottoms, trainers and a short-sleeved black running top, had parked his black Range Rover Discovery in Old Elvet just before 7.30am.

Detective Inspector Lyn Peart said: “We would especially like to hear from any rowers, dog walkers, cyclists and runners who use this area frequently.

“We are treating Mr Maine’s death as suspicious. However, it does remain unexplained and we would appeal to the public for assistance.”

Mr Maine was married to Joanna and was a father to Lucy and Jessica.
