A MAN has been cautioned after trying to steal from a van in Sunderland.

At 12.20am, on Monday, February 17, police were called to say someone was interfering with a Mercedes Sprinter van at Greenway.

A 25-year-old man was arrested and cautioned on suspicion of an attempted theft from a motor vehicle.

Officers are now investigating whether it is linked to previous thefts of catalytic converters from vans which took place overnight between Monday, February 10 and Tuesday, February 11 on Thanet Road, Taunton Square and Avonmouth Road.

A 25-year-old man was also arrested on suspicion of those offences and has been bailed pending further enquiries.

Officers are continuing to advise motorists to keep an eye out for any suspicious behaviour around a vehicle and to report it to police.

The advice is part of Operation Soundwave, the Northumbria Police campaign targeting opportunist thieves.

Anyone with information about van thefts is asked to contact police on 101, extension 69191 or the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
