MASKED men car-jacked a driver at knifepoint during a terrifying attack.

The driver had parked up his Volkswagen Golf car in Hendon yesterday and was sat behind the wheel when a BMW with blacked out windows pulled up.

Two men wearing balaclavas walked up to the car, opened the driver’s door and pulled out a knife.

They then threatened the 24-year-old before dragging him out of the car, which was parked on Hendon Valley Road at about 10.45am.

One of the men then jumped in and drove off as the other returned to the dark coloured BMW and followed.

Detectives have now been called in to help trace the thugs responsible.

Detective Inspector Steve Pescod, of Northumbria Police’s Major Crime unit, said: “We are appealing for witnesses to this robbery and for anyone who has seen either vehicle to contact police straightaway.

“These types of crime are not usual in this area and extra patrols are being carried out by uniformed officers to reassure residents.”

The victim, who was left shaken by the incident, was in a blue Golf with the registration AE51 VZS, which officers are currently trying to trace.

One of the thugs is described as 6ft tall, of medium build and spoke with a local accent. He was wearing a light blue Adidas zip up jacket and black gloves, and was armed with a knife.

The victim was unable to get a proper look of his other attacker.

Police patrols have also been stepped up in the area to reassure residents.

Acting Neighbourhood Inspector Ged Fairclough, said: “Our uniformed officers are on patrol in the area talking to local people and assisting the enquiry.

“We would ask residents to speak to our officers if they have any concerns.”

Police are appealing for witnesses anyone who was in the area at the time to contact them on 0800 555 111.
