A man who was arrested following an alleged attack which left a person fighting for his life has been bailed.

The incident happened at about 4.10am on Saturday in Rainton Street, Millfield.

The 36-year-old victim was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle with serious injuries, although he was in a critical condition, he is now described as stable.

Initial inquiries suggested the man may have been assaulted by two men in the street.

Extra officers were in the area over the weekend to carry out inquiries and offer reassurance to residents in the area.

A woman was arrested in connection with the incident, but has since been released on bail.

However, officers later arrested a 20-year-old man who has now also been bailed pending further inquiries.
