Man arrested as woman left with 'potentially life-changing injuries' after Sunderland hit and run

The man remains in police custody on Tuesday, November 3 after a woman, also aged 53, was hit by a car on Sunday, November 1, at around 7.10pm.

Hide AdA spokesman for Northumbria Police said in a statement: “A 53-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and remains in police custody.”
An appeal was launched by the force in the aftermath of the crash on Monday, November 2.
It included a photograph of a wing mirror, which officers say was left at the scene in Hall Farm Road.
A blue Ford Focus, which is believed to have been involved in the hit and run, had already collided with a stationary vehicle on the same street moments before.

Hide AdSergeant Dave Roberts, of Northumbria Police’s Motor Patrols Department, previously said: “The pedestrian in this case remains in hospital with serious injuries.
“Those injuries are not believed to be life-threatening but they could be life changing for this victim and she is being supported at this time.
“Our investigation is focused on tracking down the vehicle in question and identifying who was behind the wheel.
“There is no doubt that the driver would have been aware of the collision and they have left their wing mirror at the scene.

Hide Ad“We now need the help from the public to identify this person and would ask anyone who can assist police to get in touch.
“If you were in the area and saw the Ford Focus, or have seen a vehicle matching the description without a wing mirror, then please call.”
Police have asked anyone who was driving in the area on Sunday to review any dashcam footage to see if they captured the car believed to be involved.
