At 2.30am on Saturday, November 28, officers were on patrol in the Hindsons Crescent South area of Shiney Row when they saw a 31-year-old man riding a quad bike.

After colliding with a kerb upon seeing officers, the man proceeded to push the bike along the path – and in doing so roused suspicions that something might be afoot.

The officers subsequently spoke to the rider and asked questions about the bike – but the man’s account did not add up and he was unable to prove ownership.

Suspecting it may have been stolen, Northumbria Police’s officers arrested the rider on suspicion of theft and took the man, aged 31, into police custody for further questioning.

On Monday, November 30, officers have released an image of the quad bike in question and are asking anybody who believes it may belong to them to come forward.

Sergeant Steve Passey, of Northumbria Police, said: “This was a case of excellent police work as officers saw something suspicious and took swift action.

“After speaking to the man in question, it became clear that officers were not being given a clear account of who owned the bike or a satisfactory explanation of why it had come to be in his possession.“Following a number of enquiries, we now suspect that the bike is stolen and believe it may have been recently taken from a garage or an address in the area.

“We are now asking anybody who recognises the bike and believes it belongs to them to come forward and speak to us. I’d like to thank the officers involved for their professionalism and hopefully we can reunite the item with its rightful owner.”

Anyone who believes the quad bike may belong to them is asked to contact us via the ‘Tell Us Something’ page of the force’s website or by calling 101 quoting log 113 281120.
