Man arrested in Sunderland rape investigation

POLICE investigating a rape in Sunderland have arrested a man.

The rape happened in Sunderland city centre between 3.45am and 5.30am on Saturday July 13.

It was originally thought to have occurred in the vicinity of Fawcett Street, but it’s now believed to have taken place in the area of Tatham Street and Hudson Road.

On Wednesday, August 28, a 36-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of rape. He has been bailed pending further enquiries.

Detective Inspector Denise Clark, from Northumbria Police’s Rape Investigation Team, said: “We understand the concern incidents like this cause and I’d like to reassure people that we have arrested a man as part of the investigation.

“This is clearly extremely distressing for the victim and we’re providing as much support as possible at what it a difficult time for her. We’re continuing to appeal for witnesses and anyone who saw or heard anything is asked to get in touch.”
