A MAN has been arrested an elderly businessman was robbed in a Sunderland street.

The Echo reported earlier this week how the 86-year-old victim was mugged in Haddon Road, Grangetown, while carrying a bag of cash.

The pensioner intended to go to a nearby Post Office and pay the cash into an account.

But before he could enter the building, a man approached him and stole a money bag he was carrying.

The robber then got into a car which an accomplice was sitting in with the engine running, before the pair sped off.

It happened just after midday on Monday.

Northumbria Police confirmed today that they have arrested a man over the theft.

A spokesman said: “A 40-year-old Sunderland man has been arrested on suspicion of robbery and has since been released on police bail pending further inquiries.”
