Man arrested after smashing into roundabout following police pursuit

A man is in custody on suspicion of assault and dangerous driving after a crashing a car into a roundabout as it was being followed by police.

The A194(M) between Follingsby and White Mare Pool was closed after the collision on the Follingsby Roundabout, which links New Road and Northumberland Way, shortly before midnight last night, Wednesday, June 10.

The incident began after a car failed to stop, leading officers to pursue the vehicle.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “Shortly after 11pm yesterday officers were on patrol when a vehicle failed to stop when instructed on Old Durham Road, Gateshead.

“Officers followed the car, which later came to a stop after crashing into a roundabout on the A194 at Follingsby.

“The occupant then made off from the scene.

“A search of the area was carried out and a 43-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and assault.

“He remains in police custody and inquiries are ongoing.”
