Man arrested after claims of court brawl

A MAN has been arrested and questioned after claims of a court brawl.

A security guard at Sunderland Magistrates’ Court was allegedly attacked in the historic court buildings in the city centre on Monday morning.

Police were called following reports of a scuffle between the security worker and a member of the public.

Officers went to the court in Gill Bridge Avenue at around 11.30am and a 44-year-old Sunderland man was arrested on suspicion of assault.

He was taken into custody and questioned in connection to the incident.

A spokesman for Her Majesty’s Courts and Tribunals Service said: “There was an incident at Sunderland Magistrates’ Court on Monday morning, involving a member of the public.

“This is now a matter for the police.”

A spokeswoman for Northumbria Police said: “Police received reports of a disturbance at Sunderland Magistrates’ Court on Monday morning at 11.30am.

“Officers attended the scene, where a man was behaving violently towards security officers.

“The man was arrested and remains in police custody.”
