Man appears in court charged with causing death by dangerous driving after man is knocked down at side of road

A man has appeared in court to face a charge of causing death by dangerous driving.

Dylan Liam Dowd, of Horton Crescent, Bowburn, Durham, appeared at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates’ Court today, Thursday, February 20, to face the allegation for the first time.

The 25-year-old is charged with causing the death of Steven Bell on Saturday, March 2, last year as he drove an Audi A3 on the A177 at Shincliffe.

The court heard the case can only be heard by a crown court due to its serious nature, with the hearing adjourned until Friday, March 20.

Dowd was given unconditional bail until that date, when he will appear at Durham Crown Court.

Today, police confirmed two others arrested during the inquiry, a woman then aged 22 and a man aged 27, have been released without further action.

Shortly after his death, the family of Mr Bell released a statement paying tribute to him.

It said: “It is with deepest regret that we announce the death of Steven, whose life was taken in a tragic collision near to Durham City on Saturday, March 2.

“He was a much-loved family member and friend, he will be sadly missed by many.

“We wish to thank everyone for their support – it is greatly appreciated at this difficult time.”
