The alleged incident happened between 4pm and midnight on Sunday, September 28, in the vicinity of Argyle Square, but was only reported to police yesterday evening.

Acting Detective Sergeant Iain Brown said: “I’d urge anyone who may have been in Sunderland City Centre on the evening of Sunday, September 28, to contact us as they may have information that can help us establish what happened.

“No matter how small or insignificant they think the information is, it could prove crucial in helping us with our enquiries.

“Understandably the victim is distressed by what’s happened and we have specially trained officers from a dedicated team ensuring he has the support that is required, whether this be from police or other agencies, and officers will continue to offer this support right through the investigation.”
