A MAN has appeared in court accused of murdering a child more than two decades ago.

Steven Grieveson is accused of killing Simon Martin in May 1990.

The 14-year-old’s body was discovered at a derelict house on Roker Terrace in Sunderland.

Grieveson appeared at Newcastle Crown Court today via videolink to HMP Frankland in Durham.

Prosecutor William Lowe QC told the court: “Steven Grieveson is charged with murder in that between 18 and 27 May 1990 he murdered Simon Martin.”

During the short hearing a trial was listed for June 24 next year and Grieveson was told he will appear at court again during the week of February 11 to enter a plea to the murder charge.

Grieveson, 42, who was wearing a navy blue tracksuit top, spoke only to confirm his name and confirm he understood what had been said during the hearing and said “aye” when he was told the hearing was finished.

Brian Hegarty, defending, made no application for bail.

Grieveson was remanded in custody until the next hearing.
