Knifeman assaults Sunderland driver before stealing van

A DRIVER was help up at knifepoint and robbed of his van.

At 11.45am on Monday, a man carrying a knife got into a delivery van at Langdale Road, Penshaw, assaulted the driver and stole the van, driving off in the direction of Penshaw monument.

The man is described as being in his mid 20s, of fat build, with short dark hair, wearing a dark blue and black top.

The van driver was taken to the Sunderland Royal Hospital for treatment and has now been released from hospital.

An investigation is underway and police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident, or who sees the van, to contact them. The stolen vehicle is a white Ford Transit Van reg BT12 MHM.

Local officers are out and about in the area in support of the investigation and to provide reassurance.
