A MAN accused of killing his girlfriend because he thought she had been possessed by the devil has today changed his plea.
Experts say paranoid schizophrenic Daniel Johnson was in a psychotic and delusional state, when he strangled and stabbed 24-year-old Gemma Finnigan to death, at their home in Church View, Boldon Colliery, last September.
The 33-year-old is accused of murder and is being tried at Newcastle Crown Court.
Jurors had been asked to consider verdicts of not guilty by reason of insanity, or guilty to manslaughter by diminished responsibility.
Today, Johnson admitted the latter charge, and prosecutors accepted the plea.
The trial has heard that Johnson displayed increasingly-bizarre behaviour in the days leading up to Miss Finnigan’s death.
He will be sentenced later today.
