A MAN who murdered his ex-wife in an East Durham street has died in prison.

Joseph Iley, 61, pictured, was sentenced to life for the murder of Margaret Iley in 2007.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Justice confirmed Iley died of throat cancer earlier this month while he was serving his sentence in Preston Prison.

Some members of Iley’s family kept in touch with him and they have been informed of the death.

Newcastle Crown Court heard in June, 2007, how Iley had been stalking his ex-wife and apparently wanted to get back together with her.

He was living in Emmerson Court, Horden, and she in nearby Smilie Road at the time of the murder.

Witnesses told the court Iley was “as cool as a cucumber” as he approached Mrs Iley, 57, and plunged a blade into her neck and chest.

Judge David Hodson commended passers-by, one of whom picked up an iron bar in an attempt to halt the attack.

Iley admitted murder on February 9, 2007. Judge Hodson sentenced him to life imprisonment with a recommendation he serve a minimum of 16 years.
