A THIEF who snatched cash and booze is behind bars.

Magistrates in Peterlee jailed Ricky Burdess for 14 weeks, after he admitted stealing £531 from the till of the Royal Arms, in Eden Hill Road, and taking a bottle of Pernod from behind the bar.

Burdess, 21, of Pentland Close, Peterlee, had been drinking in the pub before carrying out the theft.

The incident, on October 23, was followed by a shoplifting offence in Asda on November 9.

From there he stole two packets of crisps and a bottle of Martini.

Sergeant Ian Dickinson, of Peterlee Neighbourhood Policing Team, said the theft was solved thanks to its Safe Store Partnership with the supermarket.

He said: “This partnership will continue to combat such offences within the area and this just goes to show it can have a positive result.

“People should be aware there’s a strong possibility they will be caught if the shoplift.”
