AN investigation has been launched into the death of a man whose body was discovered at a coastal beauty spot.
Police were called to the beach at Whitburn, near to the former rifle range, just before 7.30am on Wednesday.
The death is not being treated as suspicious.
South Tyneside Coroner Terence Carney has opened an investigation to determine the cause of the man’s death.
It is not yet known whether or not an inquest will be held.
A spokeswoman for Northumbria Police said: “At 7.26am on Wednesday we received a report that a body of a man had been found on the beach at Whitburn in South Tyneside.
“Inquiries are ongoing and there is no third party involvement.”
HM Coastguard and Sunderland RNLI were called in by the police to help with the recovery of the body.
