A petition which had been signed by more than 500 people was presented to Sunderland City Council calling for the surveillance devices.

It comes after residents became concerned about anti-social behaviour and the safety of people living and working in the area.

Presenting the residents’ plea to the council chamber during the full council meeting on Wednesday, November 20, Coun Graeme Miller, the leader of the council, said the measure was thought necessary to monitor Sea Road.

He added that it would ‘monitor any anti-social behaviour and ensure the safety of residents and traders’, who he said had started the petition to ‘express their concerns regarding these matters’.

The proposals will now be considered by Sunderland City Council officers ahead of the plans being brought back to councillors for consideration at a future date.
