A TEENAGER has been fined £110 for stealing a £8.99 crate of lager from an off-licence.

Dylan Stanley Walt, 18, walked into Castle View Stores in Castletown on December 19 and made off with his haul of Stella Artois, Sunderland magistrates heard.

Walt, of Dundas Street, Monkwearmouth, then ran off into Castletown Dene, before later being apprehended in Hylton Castle Park.

He told police he had shared the cans with friends and admitted theft.

Jason Smith, defending, said Walt’s benefits had not been paid and he felt ashamed when it was his turn to buy booze and he had no money.

“He accepts he should be in receipt of his benefits before going into retail premises,” Mr Smith added.

District Judge Roger Elsey fined Walt £110.
