POLICE were called out after escaped horses were spotted galloping down a street.

Officers attended St Luke’s Road and Forest Road, in Ford Estate, after receiving a string of calls from concerned members of the public.

It is understood a number of horses escaped from a nearby field, at about 1.50am on Monday.

One animal died after it reportedly became caught up in fencing.

A spokeswoman for Northumbria Police said: “The Neighbourhood Policing Team is working with Sunderland Council to find a solution.”

One Ford Estate resident told the Echo: “It’s shocking this has happened, but it’s not the first time.”
