Horden takeaway thief flees out of the back door while delivery man waits at the front

Have your say

A TAKEAWAY thief spring rolled out the back door after snatching his dinner from a delivery driver.

The driver, from a Chinese takeaway in Peterlee, called at a house in South Terrace, Horden, to drop off £26 order which had been placed over the phone.

The door was answered by a man with wet hair, wearing just a towel wrapped around his waist.

The supposed customer then took the bag of food and explained he would get some cash.

But the driver was left stunned when the man ran straight out the back door of the house and off down the back lane.

Police are investigating the incident and have established whoever who had been living in the home had moved out in the weeks leading up to the scam.

Inspector Dave Coxon, of Peterlee Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “Unfortunately, the driver didn’t get much of a description of the man because he was only wearing a towel and he thought he was the homeowner.”

He added an appeal for witnesses or anyone with information about the incident to come forward.

As the street is a link road to residential areas in the village, it is hoped passing drivers may be able to help track down the thief, especially as his lack of attire would have attracted attention.

The theft happened at 11pm on Monday (OCT 3).
