A HOMELESS man who stole £50 from an injured stranger has been jailed.

Alan Paul Lawrence summoned help for the badly injured man before taking his money, Durham Crown Court heard.

“The victim was walking home along a tow path in Seaham after a night out socialising,” said Joanne Kidd, prosecuting.

“The next thing he recalls is regaining consciousness in hospital.

“He had significant injuries which were not caused by Lawrence.”

The court heard Lawrence called an ambulance and sought help for his victim from a nearby house before leaving with the money.

“It is not known how the victim came by his injuries,” Ms Kidd added. “He may have been robbed by someone else, or had an accident.”

Lawrence, 20, of no fixed abode, admitted theft and common assault.

Judge Neil Clark jailed Lawrence for 15 months.
