Helicopter scrambled to Seaham after vehicle crashed into police car in early hours of the morning

The police helicopter was scrambled to Seaham in the early hours of the morning after a vehicle collided with a stationary police car before the occupants fled from the scene.

A 21-year-old man has now been arrested on suspicion of driving offences after a vehicle collided with a stationary police car in Malvern Crescent, in Seaham.

The occupants of the vehicle made off from the scene and the police helicopter was scrambled to the area at around 4.30am on Wednesday, June 24.

Residents have reported hearing the helicopter over the Dalton-le-Dale and Eastlea areas.

A spokesman for Durham Constabulary said: “A 21-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of driving while under the influence of drugs, dangerous driving, failing to stop, driving otherwise in accordance with a license, possession of a Class B drug and driving without insurance.

“He has since been released under investigation.

“The police vehicle was undamaged.”
