A THIEF tackled a pensioner to the ground before snatching her handbag.

The 72-year-old victim was walking along Annie Street, Fulwell, when a man tried to grab her handbag.

There was a struggle between them, causing the woman to fall over.

The attacker ran off with the handbag, along the lane behind Sea Road towards the seafront.

He then hid under a car parked outside Dominos Pizza shop, before running off along Sea Road.

The woman suffered cuts and bruises during her fall.

Neighbourhood Inspector Tony Carty, who covers the area, said: “It is appalling that this offender has preyed on the vulnerability of an elderly woman, and we’re doing everything we can to trace the person responsible.

“I would urge anyone who was in the area and may have seen anything, or may have information to contact police as, no matter how small they think the information they have is, it all helps us to build a picture and make sure the offender is arrested and put before the courts.”

The offender was in his late teens to early 20s, between 5ft 10in and 6ft tall, and of slim build.

He was wearing a blue stripey jumper, a woolly hat and was carrying a backpack.

The theft happened at about 4.30pm on Sunday.

Anyone with any information can phone police on 101, extension 69191.
