Hammer thug attacked man in home

A HOUSEHOLDER was taken to hospital after a burglar burst into his home and attacked him with a hammer.

The burglar stormed inside the house at Whitburn Road, Cleadon, before threatening the man with a hammer.

During the terrifying attack, the raider hit the man across the shoulder before stealing a “small amount” of cash and fleeing, possibly in a car.

Police are now investigating the aggravated burglary, which took place at 2.20am yesterday.

A spokeswoman for Northumbria Police said: “The man is described as being white, over 6ft, of thin build and with dark hair. He was wearing dark clothing and spoke with a local Sunderland accent.”

The householder suffered minor injuries to his shoulder.
