A PROLIFIC shoplifter who attacked his girlfriend has been jailed.

Kieron Clark assaulted his victim after a drinking session, Durham Crown Court heard.

The victim suffered a black eye, bruised rib and swollen cheek, said Vince Ward, prosecuting.

She was also left in fear and felt unable to leave the house for some time.

Clark, 24, of Thornton Close, Ludworth, County Durham, denied assault occasioning actual bodily harm on May 29.

He was convicted of the offence after a jury trial last year.

Clark admitted five offences of theft between October and December, and asked for a further three to be taken into consideration.

“It is all shoplifting,” added Mr Ward. “The most recent thefts were from shops in the Peterlee area.” The court heard Clark has been previously convicted of 98 offences, of which 68 were for dishonesty.

Paul Abrahams, defending, said in mitigation: “The assault was unpleasant, but the pair are no longer in a relationship so it is unlikely to be repeated.”

Clark was jailed for 23 months and banned from contacting his victim for five years.
