THIS is the car used by jewellery shop robbers moments after it was abandoned and found on fire.

The theft happened just before 10am yesterday at Vine Jewellers in Athenaeum Street in Sunderland city centre.

A member of staff at the jewellers suffered minor injuries during the incident and received hospital treatment.

Cash and jewellery were stolen in the raid.

The offenders are described as wearing dark clothing and were not armed.

They got away in a silver Mazda MX5 later found abandoned after being set on fire in Sheepfolds Industrial Estate.

Detective Inspector Dave English said: “The offenders have made off from the jewellers in a Maxda MX5 which was later found abandoned after being set on fire in Sheepfolds Industrial Estate and we’re keen to speak to anyone who may have seen it being driven from the Athenaeum Street to the industrial estate which would’ve been around 10am on Tuesday.

“We are also interested in hearing from anyone who saw the vehicle or anything suspicious before the robbery.”
