BRASS taps have been taken by bold thieves.
Durham Police are warning householders to be alert after a spate of incidents.
Six reports have been received of taps being forcibly taken from the outside of houses in Chester-le-Street, between November 18 and Thursday.
The incidents occurred in Lancaster Terrace, The Crescent, Weardale Terrace, Coniston Close, Mendip Avenue and Holmlands Park.
Detective Sergeant Paul Gray, of Chester-le-Street CID, said: “The thief has used force to knock taps off their connecting pipes leaving water to flood out over gardens.
“This has not only caused a great deal of inconvenience to the victims but also, at this time of year when temperatures are falling, has put them at risk of injury as the water is liable to freeze.”
Det Sgt Gray also urged householders to be alert to their taps being targeted.
