OFFICERS will be dishing out free bike locks after a spate of thefts.
Washington police have seen a rise in the number of bikes being snatched from open sheds and garages or when they have been left in the street unlocked.
To encourage residents to keep their bikes secure, officers will be handing out free cycle locks on a first-come, first-served basis outside Halfords in The Galleries Retail Park on Friday, from 10am to 4pm.
Inspector Paul Stewart said: “We want to remind cyclists of the importance of keeping their bikes secure when they are not on the move.
“Leaving your bike unlocked makes it too easy for the opportunist thief to simply get on the bike and pedal off.”
