TWO prisoners charged with the murder of a paedophile inmate at a top security jail have appeared at crown court.

Nathan Mann, 23, and Michael Parr, 32, are accused of killing Mitchell Harrison, who was jailed in January 2010 for raping a 13-year-old girl.

Harrison, 23, was found in his cell by staff at Frankland prison, in Durham, on Saturday morning and was pronounced dead at the scene.

It is believed Harrison was tortured and disembowelled by his attackers, although police have declined to comment on the details of his death.

Mann and Parr both appeared at Newcastle Crown Court yesterday, flanked by five prison officers in the dock.

Two more prison officers sat in the press gallery, near the exit to the courtroom.

Mann and Parr both wore yellow and green prison-issue jump suits and spoke only to confirm their names at the five-minute hearing. They will be back in court for a plea and directions hearing on January 20 and a provisional trial date has been listed for March 5.

Both men are expected to be assessed by psychiatrists before the next hearing.

A post-mortem examination carried out by Home Office pathologist Dr Nigel Cooper confirmed that the man died of multiple injuries.

Harrison, originally from Wolverhampton, was jailed in January 2010 after he admitted raping the girl in Kendal, in Cumbria.
