TWO men and two teenagers have appeared in court charged with the killing of a family’s pet rabbit.

Martin John Bell, 20, and Frank Hudson, 19, along with two 17-year-olds who cannot be named, are charged with unnecessary suffering to a protected animal between June 26 and June 29 in Seaham.

One of the 17-year-olds is also charged with the theft of the animal.

White Lion Head rabbit Percy was taken from the home of the Atkinson family in Dawdon, just days after giving birth to five babies.

Peterlee Magistrates’ Court heard the alleged offence involved attempting to drown the rabbit while in a bath, shave it and throwing it from a window before killing it.

No pleas were entered by any of the defendants, with their solicitor Mike Simpson granted an adjournment to allow time for their interviews to be listened to.

Bell, of Parkside Crescent, Parkside, Seaham, and Hudson, of Evesham Road, Eastlea, Seaham, and the two teenagers, were released on conditional bail until their next appearance.

It will take place on Friday, September 12, at the same court.
