THE two Labour runners for the Northumbria Police commissioner role have been announced.

Sunderland City councillor Tom Foster will go head-to-head with former MP Vera Baird when Labour Party members go to the ballot box to decide who will be their candidate in November’s elections.

As well as serving as a Sunderland councillor for the Castle ward, Coun Foster is deputy chairman of the Northumbria Police Authority, which is soon to be scrapped. He also served as Mayor of Sunderland in 2006 to 2007.

He is stepping down as councillor at this year’s elections.
