Former Sunderland councillor admits to string of child sex offences

A former Labour councillor has admitted a series of historic child sex offences.

Thomas Wright, 66, who served as a councillor in Sunderland, committed the crimes on boys and girls aged under 16.

At Newcastle Crown Court Wright, of no fixed address but previously of First Street, Leadgate, Consett, pleaded guilty to a total of eight charges.

Wright, who was suspended from the Labour party last year, admitted an indecent assault on a male and two charges of indecent assault against a female.

He is also pleaded guilty to three charges of committing a serious sex offence against a male and two of indecent assault against a male.

He will be sentenced at a later date and has been granted bail in the meantime.
