Flytippers dumped asbestos on country lane

Have your say

FLY-tippers who dumped potentially deadly asbestos on Green Belt land have been labelled “despicable”.

The bag of contaminated waste was discovered on the side of a road at Sunniside Lane in Cleadon Village.

Discarded children’s clothes and toys were also strewn on land close by.

Coun Jeff Milburn, who represents Cleadon and East Boldon for the Conservatives, condemned the action as “dangerous and irresponsible”.

He said: “I’m sure that whoever the items belong to had no idea they would be dumped in this way. They probably paid someone in good faith in the belief that it would be gotten rid of in an appropriate manner. It’s not that hard to do. The people who did this are not only lazy, they are despicable too. I want to see whoever is responsible for this prosecuted.”
