Ex-Sunderland footballer Michael Chopra has gambled away around £2million, he told jurors.
He said: “It has already been out in public so I will just say it, I have probably lost about £2million.”
Chopra denied prosecution claims he had gone to court to lie about the origins and destination of the £50,000 as a favour to John Somerville.
He said: “I wouldn’t put myself in that situation when I’ve got a football career ahead of me.”
The court heard Chopra was “publicly supported” by manager Roy Keane when he played for Sunderland in 2008 and was hospitalised in London through his addiction.
