FORMER Sunderland and Middlesbrough footballer Stewart Downing has been arrested on suspicion of assaulting his former girlfriend in a North East pub.

The 27-year-old winger, loaned to Sunderland in 2003 from his home town club Boro, was reportedly arrested after a disturbance at the Cross Keys pub in Yarm, during the early hours of yesterday.

Downing and his 32-year-old ex-partner had allegedly already been asked to leave the venue.

They were outside when police arrived.

Both were arrested on suspicion of assault and have been released on bail pending further inquiries.

Downing who is now at Liverpool, has also played for Aston Villa and has won 30 England caps.
