Drunk who abused police in Sunderland ordered to pay £175

A DRUNK staggering about in Sunderland city centre abused police until he was arrested.

Officers were called to Holmeside after shoppers complained about Steven Barnett and two pals.

He swore at police and was told to move on, but after causing in trouble in Park Lane Interchange, the 33-year-old was eventually arrested.

Barnett, of Azalea Terrace South, Sunderland, pleaded guilty to being drunk and disorderly at the city’s magistrates’ court.

Gerry Armstrong, defending, said: “Shortly before this incident, his partner and he have separated. They decided it was time to take a break and his friends had taken him out to commiserate.

“Most of the exuberance and bad language was between themselves. It was only when police saw him later that night that they decided enough was enough.

“He went quietly with them and there was no violence.

“He is ashamed to be back before the courts, as he thought he had put them behind him.”

Barnett was ordered to pay £175 in court costs, a fine and a victim surcharge.
