A DRIVER has admitted causing the death of a pensioner in a road accident.

At Durham Crown Court, Stephen Wills pleaded guilty to causing death by careless driving on January 3.

The court heard 79-year-old Norman Hodgson died after he was struck while crossing Waldridge Road, near his home in Chester-le-Street.

Prosecutor Shaun Dodds said the Crown’s case is Wills was driving his Toyota Aygo above 50mph when it struck Mr Hodgson on the 30mph limit road.

Jane Waugh, defending, said Wills, 44, of Glen Path, Chester-le-Street, pleaded guilty on the basis he was travelling at no more than 34mph. Mr Dodds said the prosecution would need time to consider if the basis of plea is acceptable.

Wills was granted conditional bail and the case adjourned until June 20.
