A DRINK-driver unable to see through her icy windscreen knocked over a man and killed him.

Nicola Elgie, 27, admitted hitting Stephen Rutter, 35, as he crossed the road, Durham Crown Court heard yesterday.

Unable to see through her windscreen, Elgie, of Arthur Street, High Handenhold, drove over the puffin crossing at Ropery Lane, Chester-le-Street, driving into Mr Rutter, who was thrown into the windscreen, on March 7.

Mr Rutter, who lived just a couple of streets away from where the crash happened, died the next day.

Elgie pleaded guilty to causing Mr Rutter’s death by driving without due care and driving without insurance. The court also heard Elgie was over the legal alcohol limit.

She was warned she faces jail when sentenced next month.
