Detectives release CCTV images as the hunt continues for machete raider who targeted Sunderland newsagents

DETECTIVES hunting a machete man who tried to raid a Sunderland newsagents have released CCTV images of a man they are trying to trace.

Police were called to Max and Sons in Eden Vale after reports of a man carrying a machete trying to rob the shop.

He escaped empty handed.

Police say a member of staff suffered a minor hand injury in the robber’s attempt on the shop.

CCTV images have now been released by police of a man they are keen to speak to.

Acting Detective Sergeant Nick Lawrence said: “We’re carrying out inquiries into the incident and are keen for anyone who has information about the identity of the man responsible or any information that may help with our inquiries to get in contact.

“The incident happened early on Saturday morning at a time when people may have been out walking dogs or going to the newsagents to get a paper. They may have seen something that at the time didn’t seem out of the ordinary and we’d ask them to think back.

“This was a terrifying incident and while the offender didn’t make off with anything, a 63 year old elderly shopkeeper was injured.”
