A WOMAN has denied stealing £50,000 from her elderly mother while she had power of attorney to safeguard her finances before her death.

Gillian Jameson is accused of acting against Mary Hornsby’s financial interests by taking money and spending it on a conservatory and cars.

Appearing at Sunderland Magistrates’ Court, Jameson, 54, pleaded not guilty to fraud by abuse of position, between June 2010 and July 2013.

Jameson, of Redshank Close, Ayton, Washington, also denied dishonestly failing to disclose information to Durham County Council.

She is alleged to have committed fraud in failing to disclose inheritance received from her mother’s estate, which impacted on her eligibility to receive certain benefits.

The bench declined jurisdiction and Jameson was bailed to appear at Newcastle Crown Court on January 19.
