A DAD-OF-THREE has been remanded in custody in connection with an incident which saw parts of Shiney Row evacuated for several hours at the weekend.

Wayne O’Shaughnessy, 33, has been charged with making threats to destroy property with intent to endanger life in facebook messages sent to his 13-year-old daughter and estranged wife.

Police cordoned off Mill Terrace between Shiney Row roundabout and its junction with Thirlmere Close at 1.30pm on Saturday and a major incident was declared. Residents of up to 15 homes were evacuated to nearby pubs for more than five hours, while engineers from Northern Gas Network turned off the gas supply as fire engines stood by.

O’Shaughnessy, who was arrested in bed at his Mill Terrace home at 6.20pm that evening, entered no plea when he appeared before Sunderland Magistrates’ Court today.

The bench rejected a bail application by defence solicitor George Tilly, and the case was sent to Newcastle Crown Court, where O’Shaughnessy will appear on November 17.
